So the big news today is a security release of Joomla 3.8.6. We’re going to take a look at two ways to update your Joomla site. You’ll see Joomla 3.8.6 is out and if you want information on what the low priority security fix was and some of the bug fixes and improvements you can check the link. So there’s two ways that we’re going to look at updating our Joomla sites today.

The first one is using the core updater when you log in to your admin area and get a notification that there’s a new Joomla version available. If you don’t see that, it hasn’t come up yet for whatever reason, you can go to ‘components’ and ‘Joomla update.’ Now if you don’t have ‘components’ ‘Joomla update’ in that menu, then go ahead and check out the link below. I have a tutorial on how to solve that problem. So you can update by clicking the ‘update now’ button or you can go to the ‘Joomla update’ menu and under ‘components.’ I’m going to do that today.

This is the basicjoomla.com site, and you’ll see a Joomla update was found. So click ‘install the update.’ But make sure you have a good working backup of your Joomla site. Use Akeeba backup to backup your site. There’s a link in the video description below. I do have this backed up. I’m going to click ‘install the update.’
Once that bar has reached across, it says this site’s been updated and a good thing to do is to test it so we’ll go up here and we will go to ‘preview,’ and there you have it. The site is working and we’ve updated that Joomla website right there.

So that’s the first way using the Joomla core.

The other way is to use myJoomla.com. It’s a place where you could manage one Joomla site or many Joomla sites, updating extensions, running security scans, doing all sorts of things. I have all my sites lined up here and you’ll see a bunch here still showing Joomla updates available that I have not updated yet. So what we’re going to do is we will do 88keysbythesea. I’m going to click ‘start an upgrade’, and the great thing about myJoomla.com is there’s plenty of information to read and learn about Joomla, learn about how your site works and runs, and also to just help you go step-by-step through things. I’m not concerned about those things in this case with that site. I know what’s going on, so I’m going to go ahead and start the upgrade. The last backup was taken 13 hours ago. So we will click ‘start an upgrade of the site’ and we’ll be taken to this next window where again green bars are going across while the upgrade process takes place.

Now let’s just check back at this update and process it is finished. All the green bars are across, so through myJoomla.com I have updated that site and actually I can go and update number of sites at the same time, save time going into one one one over and over again and updating.

The last step is to make sure the upgrade took. So we’ll preview the page. It’s there and as we say on the west coast of Canada and also in England I guess, at least – What was the movie that I saw it in? Mary Poppins, the original. Dick Van Dyke says, “Bob’s your uncle!” So there you go.

We’ve looked at two ways how to update Joomla to the latest version through (1) myJoomla.com, and (2) using the core.

And so basically, that’s it. That’s all I wanted to share with you today. Thanks for your support of this channel and for tuning in and as always please do subscribe and ring that bell. Rick says in the chat, “Backup, backup, backup.” He just had to install a backup to his 3-month-old iMac. Wow! You have a backup. That was great. Good thing you had that backup, Rick. Everybody, ya do backup your sites, and watch the playlist for all the videos I have on the different aspects and different ways to backup your Joomla site.

So that is it for today. Thanks for tuning in. As always enjoy your Joomla sites and God bless. #joomla
